container flowers - zoewithlove.me

There’s something special about a good flower haul to make a girl happy. I just love that moment when all the flowers are packed together before they are planted into their intended spaces for the season. I’m sharing one of the containers I made that would make an amazing Mother’s Day gift or to decorate the exterior of your own home. You’ll also find some of my favorite Mother’s Day gift ideas that any garden lover and mom would be thrilled to receive!

My goal was to create romantic planters this year with cool tones, so I chose lots of soft pink blooms and silvery foliage. This particular planter hangs on my front porch railing, it’s the same basic shape as a window box and these flowers would work great for that too (these are all good flower choices for part sun). This romantic container garden happens to coordinate perfectly with my Pink Peony Wreath I recently made (this would also make for an amazing Mother’s Day gift!) I’ll list the specific colors and types of each plant below.

So some info about this container if you’re interested in purchasing one. Apparently, you’re supposed to use a liner or it will rust out (I missed that memo). I swear these instructions weren’t there when I bought it last year (they are there now!) I also left mine out all year long (it’s so pretty with pine and dried hydrangea in the winter) which is probably the reason it started to rust out already. Anyway, that’s why there are some rust spots planter. I may have to get a replacement in a year or 2, but in my opinion the clean lines and zinc color are perfect enough to justify the re-purchase.

Container Gardening Tips - zoewithlove.me

I always use the empty containers from the plants to take up space in my larger containers. This helps use less soil, use even more containers with bigger pots since seasonal plants won’t root all the way down.

Fill up your container with potting soil almost to a third of the way and have your plants ready to go. Tip: Water the plants you are going to use in your container garden before you transfer them.

Dig out small sections when you find the placement you are happy with for each plant. Loosen the roots a bit from the bottom and place them in their spots. Once you are happy with how everything looks fill in with more potting soil, and lightly pack in the soil. Leave about a 1/2 an inch or so space from the soil to the lip of the container so when you water the soil doesn’t spill out when watering.

These flowers will fill out amazingly within the next couple of months. I swear by this plant fertilizer in my containers to give them a little boost. Another tip: keep your planter light and don’t water it before you move it, water it well once it’s where you will be keeping it (or be ready to use some serious muscles!)

Flowers used to create this romantic container garden:

2 Pink Double Impatiens in Appleblossom (I love this blush color, it’s much prettier in person than in my photos!)

1 White Euphorbia (I used the ‘Breathless’ variety)

2 Silver Falls aka Dichondra (these will eventually spill out over the sides of the container)

Update! Here is the container garden 3 months later!
