Tips for Visiting a You-Pick Flower Farm

Tips for Visiting a You-Pick Flower Farm | Lifestyle Blog, Zoë With Love

This post is sponsored by Avon, however all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Every summer, one of my favorite weekend activities to do is to go to our local farm that offers you-pick flowers (here are our photos from our visit last year!). The flowers will still be going strong through September and October so we may need to squeeze in another visit! There’s something about wandering around flower fields that clears my mind and helps me refocus. I love that our local flower farm has such a great variety including cosmos, salvia, zinnias, snapdragons and queen annes lace. You can make a gorgeous wildflower looking bouquet and most of these are great for drying, too!

  • Try to cut flowers that have longer stems, they will last longer at home.
  • If possible, cut the flowers in the morning or evening. Avoid the middle of the day when they lose the most water and are more prone to wilting.
  • There will most likely still be multiple size stems based on flower variety. Keep that in mind when you place your flowers in vases at home.
  • Bring a non-breakable vase and bottle of water to transport your flowers home, especially if you live far!
  • Be ready for bees! They will be buzzing around doing their jobs but won’t bother you.
  • Get ready to walk especially in uneven terrain. Typically there is a good amount of space in between flower sections as well. However, important to keep in mind for your little ones or the elderly if you plan on taking them.

Pack the bug repellant!

Let’s face it, you’re going to be outside going through lots of  brush and foliage, and it’s inevitable that there will be some bugs around. Avon carries a deet free insect repellant line with select products using picaridin, which is odor free and less sticky/greasy than deet. I heard about Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard Collection when a neighbor mentioned the she was using it over the 4th of July, and I wanted to give it a try. Not only do these products repel insects (mosquitoes and deer ticks), bu many also have SPF in the formula, so its benefits are twofold while you are out during the day.

Being that we live in Pennsylvania and ticks can be a problem, you can never be too careful, and I for one would rather wear repellant then have to deal with that. If you happen to garden or do yard work, Avon’s Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus IR 3535 Aerosol Spray SPF 28 and the Skin So Soft Bug Guard IR 3535 Expedition Pump Spray SPF 30 are particularly great products to have on hand as well!

One of these items that is so great to keep in your bag are the Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Picaridin Towelettes. They are really easy to apply and just one wipe has plenty of product on it. Now, I don’t know about you, but I tend to be a magnet when it comes to mosquitoes. What I mean is, I could literally be sitting right next to my husband and end up with a bunch of bites while he has none! There have been so many times (especially on vacation) where I wouldn’t be prepared and ended up getting bit up by so many mosquitoes. The entire Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard Collection is available now through your local Avon representative so you can be covered in the final weeks of summer. Check out Avon.com to find a local representative in your area.

All-in-One: A Market Backpack

Want to talk about function and cuteness all wrapped up in one? A market backpack not only looks really great, but it’s functional too! I bought the one here for farmers markets since it’s been such a perfect way to carry all of my produce and flowers while also holding my wallet and other items. Most flower cutting farms provide a bucket with water, however, since my son really wanted to carry that around, I snipped my stems and would put them in my basket. Then we combined our flowers at the end. Not to mention it makes a great photo prop and is perfect for holding your camera/phone when you’re not using them.

The one I own was purchased from amazon, but I had some issues with the buckle. However, I ended up keeping it because 1. I really liked the shape of it, and 2. I’m terrible at returning things. I linked a few more options below that would also work and keep the buckle issue in mind when ordering!

Slip on the Rubber Boots

I can still remember the first time we ever went flower picking. That’s when I made the mistake of wearing a pair of white sequined slip on sneakers. I know what you’re thinking and, yes,- the shoes got ruined. Of course the ground was muddy so I quickly learned my lesson. Now we only trek to the farm in our rubber rain boots for obvious reasons. While rubber rain boots aren’t my first choice to wear in the heat of the summer, the benefit of saving my other shoes and having my legs covered while walking through taller grass and mud is worth it (plus they look cute!).

So without a doubt, wear your boots! I love the green color Hunters for women and for kids since they are gender neutral, easy for kids to put on and it’s perhaps the one item I can actually match in with my son! They come in all sorts of colors so you can pick which style fits you and your family best!
